The Tangent TM3 is a highly regarded vintage British loudspeaker produced in the late 1970s (circa 1978). It comes from the original Tangent Acoustics company (founded by John Greenbank), which should not be confused with the modern-day Danish brand "Tangent Audio."
The TM3 is often cited by audiophiles as a "hidden gem" of the British hi-fi golden age, frequently compared favorably to the legendary BBC LS3/5a monitors.
Sound Signature & Character
The "British Sound": Like many speakers from this era, the TM3 excels in midrange clarity and vocal reproduction. It provides a very "neutral" and transparent presentation.
Imaging: Due to its relatively narrow baffle and high-quality crossover, it is known for excellent stereo imaging and soundstage depth.
Bass Performance: While the B200 woofer provides a smooth low end, these are compact cabinets. Users often describe them as "bass shy" compared to modern floorstanders, but very tight and tuneful. The LS3/5a Alternative: Many vintage enthusiasts argue that the TM3 offers a similar (or even superior) midrange to the famous LS3/5a but with more "scale" and dynamic headroom due to the larger B200 woofer.
Collector's Notes
Build Quality: Most units were finished in high-quality Teak or Walnut veneers.
Maintenance: Because they use rubber surrounds (unlike the foam surrounds used by many competitors), the woofers often remain in excellent condition 40+ years later without needing a "re-foam." However, the KEF T27 tweeters can be fragile, and the capacitors in the crossover may need replacing to restore the original factory sound.
Compatibility: They perform best on heavy stands (roughly 20 inches high) and benefit from high-quality amplification, despite their relatively modest power handling (estimated at 50W–75W).
