The KEF Chorale
The KEF Chorale is a classic two-way bookshelf loudspeaker from the "golden era" of British Hi-Fi. Known for its precision engineering and natural tonal balance, it was a staple of KEF’s lineup in the 1970s and remains a highly regarded choice for vintage audio enthusiasts.
Key Design & Components
The original Chorale features a closed-box (acoustic suspension) design, which helps produce a tight and controlled bass response. It is built around two iconic KEF drive units:
T27 Mylar Dome Tweeter (SP1032): Renowned for its crisp, detailed high frequencies and excellent dispersion. This same tweeter was famously used in the legendary BBC LS3/5A monitors.
B200 Bextrene Cone Woofer (SP1014): An 8-inch driver designed to deliver smooth midrange performance and accurate bass. Performance Characteristics
Sound Signature: The Chorale is often described as having a "sweet" and well-balanced English sound, excelling in jazz and classical music due to its airy highs and natural midrange.
Bass Response: While accurate, the bass is typical of a sealed-box design of its era; it is not overly punchy and may show some irregularity below 80Hz.
Room Size: It is ideal for smaller to medium-sized rooms (up to roughly 130 sq ft) where its imaging and detail can truly shine.
